Choosing the Right Building Aggregates for Your Project

Mark Luck

Primary aggregates have been used in construction for hundreds of years, playing a key role in everything from roads and building foundations to smaller projects like paths and driveways.

However, these building aggregates vary in grading, material, and texture, which determines their suitability for different applications. That's why understanding the difference between various aggregates and their uses is essential.

Read on to learn more about the most common types of building aggregates and their applications so you can confidently choose the best option for your project.

Building Sand

Building sand is the most basic form of building aggregate. There are various types of building sand, which can be used for a number of bricklaying tasks. For example, sharp sand is a general-purpose sand, often used for mixing concrete or creating dry mix mortar to lay paving slabs. It is preferred for its larger grains, which provide high strength and low flexibility.

On the other hand, recycled sand is an environmentally friendly alternative, which is collected from existing constructions and recycled to be reused. This recycled aggregate can be used for a number of jobs, including mortar mixes or on top of block paving for a level finish.

Gravel

Gravel is a loose aggregate made of rock fragments. With larger grains than sand, it is ideal for various landscaping projects. Commonly used for driveways, roads, and pathways, gravel can also be mixed with concrete but is often laid on top.

Crushed gravel is created when large pieces of stone or rock are intentionally crushed into smaller pieces, giving them irregular shapes and sizes. Naturally formed gravel, on the other hand, has been shaped naturally by erosion. Pea gravel is a common natural gravel that has a rounded shape and smooth texture.

Ballast

Ballast is a mixture of coarse sand and gravel, typically ranging from 10mm to 20mm in size. It is widely used in construction for creating strong foundations, particularly in concrete mixes. Its combination of stability and drainage makes it ideal for road bases, railway tracks, footings, and driveways.

Shingle

Often, the terms shingle and gravel are used interchangeably. Although they are both considered decorative aggregates, they differ in appearance. Shingle stones are small, smooth pebbles that can be found naturally on the beach. They can come in a number of sizes, with 20mm shingle being a popular choice for driveways, footpaths, drainage and more.

MOT Type 1

MOT Type 1 Subbase is a granular crushed aggregate, typically made of materials like gritstone, limestone, granite, or basalt. It is one of the most widely used building aggregates for sub-base construction, known for its high quality and versatility. It provides a stable and durable foundation for roads, driveways, footpaths, under paving, patios or artificial grass.
