Top Tips for Choosing the Right Topsoil for Your Project

Mark Luck

Some people may struggle to understand why buying topsoil is necessary when the garden already has soil. Topsoil is beneficial for many landscaping projects as it boosts soil health by providing essential nutrients, supports microorganisms, retains moisture and improves drainage.

Although choosing topsoil may not be the most exciting part of renovating your garden, refusing to invest in topsoil could be detrimental to your plants. When starting a landscaping project, gardeners should spend a little time, money and effort in choosing a topsoil that meets the needs of their project.

Read on to discover the key considerations to make when selecting topsoil, ensuring you can enjoy a thriving and fertile garden.

Assess the Current Condition of Your Soil

Check the type and quality of your soil by checking its pH level, texture and nutrient content. This should inform you what you need from your topsoil to enhance the health of your soil. For example, if your current soil is too sandy, opt for a topsoil that has high moisture retention properties.

Determine the Intended Use of Soil

What the soil will be used for plays an important role in the composition of your soil. For example, fruit and vegetables require soil rich in organic matter to thrive, while certain other plants prefer a slightly acidic topsoil.

There are three grades of topsoil, each of which is suited to diverse applications:

●      Premium Grade: Loamy soil is highly fertile and has a good structure, making it suitable for building up flower borders, creating new beds or as a compost mix for potted plants.

●      General-Purpose Grade: This can be bought in various screen size grades to make new beds or borders or as a base for sowing lawns. Coarser grades are useful for turf laying, while finer grades are better for top-dressing lawns.

●      Economy Grade: Economy topsoil, known as dug (unscreened), is commonly used for landscaping tasks where volume rather than quality is required.

Organic Matter

Buying topsoil with organic matter is important for soil fertility and plant growth. Choose a quality topsoil with a high quantity of organic matter, including composed materials and manure. The percentage of organic matter you require can depend on your gardening goals, but it should be somewhere in the region of 3 -7%.

Buy From Reputable Topsoil Suppliers

Topsoil should always be purchased from reliable topsoil suppliers to ensure its quality has been verified. Topsoil suppliers provide the soil with an official certification, which confirms it has been properly tested for contaminants, like pesticides and heavy metals, and meets quality standards.
